Digital Formative Assessments

Formative assessments are helpful tools for teachers as they assess students during the learning process. These types of assessments do not need to be graded, but rather they inform the teacher on student understanding and help guide future instruction. Formative assessments can also provide feedback to students to help their performance.

Digital formative assessments are valuable to teachers because they are a time saver in the classroom!. Apps and website will automatically grade the student responses and correlate a chart for teachers to check student understanding. This allows me to spend more time teaching your child! Digital formative assessments are also beneficial because they encourage student engagement. A lot of the programs are created to feel like a game and students are excited to participate. Below you will find a couple examples of digital formative assessments that we will use in our classroom.

Kahoot is a digital formative assessment tool that allows teachers to administer quizzes, discussions, or surveys. It is a multiple choice game based classroom response system played by the whole class! Students can answer the questions with the smartphones, tablets, or computers.

eSpark is another digital formative assessment tool that can be used for both math and reading. Not only does it assess student progress, but it also instructs them on the skills. Each student is set on their own learning path according to his or her skill level and goals. Students go through differentiated apps, videos, and creative challenges. Afterwards, students are asked to create a video response to demonstrate mastery of the skill. The app then reports data to teachers and monitors students’ growth, usage, and skill level. Weekly updates are sent to teachers to identify interventions needed, praise, or feedback.
